Research and Planning

                             Preliminary Task

In this task I was instructed to make a 30-40 second radio show. It had to have a jingle and a special guest that would be interviewed by the hosts. This is being done so we have a foundation for the task we will be completing in the future. But before we can make the radio show itself some preparation has to go in before hand. Before doing the task my group and I had to make the script and find the jingle we were going to use at the start of the radio show. The video below  shows one of the many discussions we had about the script and the style the show should follow.

There were many major decisions that had to go into the making of our preliminary task. firstly we had to decide what our show would be about. Beatriz was into fashion and as a group we decided our radio show would revolve around New York fashion week as it was going on at the time. Then it came to making the script. In the video above it shows me and my group talking about our script in it's current state. I suggested that there should be more chat between hosts as we are going for a friendlier tone. But one problem with that is that we had to implement this with around 20 seconds of audio being between hosts

The flowchart  shows the order in which our Radio show should run. this demonstrates the planning we went through beforehand to make this radio segment

This is a more in depth version of the flow chart. We made this so that when it came down to constructing our radio show it was a straightforward process

Editing

As can be seen in the radio show i did not have many lines so i volunteered to edit most of the show. The main tasks i had to do was add in the archive and any other pieces of sfx need to make the audio sound smoother

This is an example of me using the fade out tool so there was a smooth transition from the the jingle to the first presenter

This tool was used to put sound clips that we had split into place so the radio show was in the correct order

Understanding Genre

Researching Genre:

Qualitative research- This is research that provides detailed explanations and descriptions on the topic being researched rather than data. This type of research is done by using questionnaires, observations or interviews that consist of open questions. This is most effective when its used at the start of researching products. a strength of this is it gives more detail than quantitative research. But a down fall is that it is very time consuming. An example of a open question is 'what do you like about local radio news bulletins'.

Quantitative Research- This is research that provides statistical data. This research can be done by using questionnaires and interviews that consist of closed questions. A strength of Quantitative research is that it is easy and cheap to do. A weakness is the lack of detail provided by this research. An example of a closed question is 'do you like local radio news bulletins'.

Primary Research- This is the research done by ourselves using research methods. We use this to find out about our target audience so we use the most suitable topics for our news bulletin. Theses include self report studies like questionnaires and interviews. this type of research can give us Qualitative and Quantitative data. The only issue with this is we have to be careful in making sure our research is ethical as this may affect its validity.

Secondary Research-  This research is done by using data that has already been collected. we can use this to prove trends. we can get this from sources like national statistics and the internet ( e.g. google or Bing). a positive is that the information we find is very useful and will save us the trouble of having to research it ourselves. But it can also not be useful as the information could be out of date and therefore unreliable.

How I would implement our Research Methods

Primary Research

Research method 1- One way of researching is through interviews. In order for us to be able to generalise to the public we would need to use a sample that has an equal amount of people from different ages, gender, ethnicity and class.

To gain as much info as possible without going away from the topic is to use a semi-structured interview. This is where we have a set amount of questions but the interviewer can alter or add questions depending on the interviewees answer. This research can give us qualitative and quantitative data.

Research Method 2- Another research method we can use is observations. these will most likely be covert and non participant. This will help us to avoid the Hawthorne effect but most of the data we gather will be subjective

Research method 3- We can also use questionnaires. These are easy and cheap to make and can reach a large amount of people. In order to get both quantitative and qualitative data we would use both open and close questions in the questionnaire. we will make it anonymous to make sure that the answers we get are more valid

Secondary Research

Research Method 4- A way of researching using secondary research is to gather evidence from the office of national statistics. They are the UK's largest producer of national statistics. This means they are very reliable and can be helpful for our research.

Research method 5- One more way to research using secondary methods is to use the internet to find information. This will make it very easy to find information we need. But anyone can post information so some data may be unreliable.

Codes and Conventions of a public local news bulletin

In order to understand what a local news radio bulletin is I have to understand it's Genre I do this by  listening to a local radio news bulletin. I chose the one in Bristol and below are the results I found

One way of understanding genre is analysing the codes and conventions present in that genre. the following sound clips are examples of codes and conventions I found in a public local radio news bulletin. This is an example of primary qualitative research I did to understand genre

CDC1- Jingle

The first code and convention I will be talking about is the jingle that is generally played at the start of most news broadcasts. In this broadcast that I have used as my example there is an upbeat jingle with a female personality saying 'Emma Briton radio Bristol' the purpose is to introduce the show so new listeners know what radio show this is

CDC2- Continuity announcer

Another code and convention of a news radio broadcast is there's always a continuity announcer that introduces the personality presenting the news. in this example our news reader is Keith Goodin. the reason for a continuity announcer is that the people listen at home know that the news they are hearing is legitimate and if is not then there is someone they can hold accountable

CDC3- Time

The time is read out because there is news every hour, therefore this makes it easier for the listener to know when the time of the news and catch up on other news.
CDC4- Radio ID

Radio ID  is where the name of the radio is announced.

CDC5- Interview

An interview is a segment where a radio brodcast gets an outside perspective. This is so the news story seems more reliable

Codes and conventions of Commercial local news bulletin

CDC1- Jingle

A jingle that is generally played at the start of most news broadcasts. it is that broadcasts staple and makes them familiar with their audience

CDC2- Interview

Commercial Radio also have interviews. It seems for the same reason as public radio

CDC3- time

This broadcast also has time so that listeners know that their on every hour

CDC4- Radio ID

The radio announcer also announces his name in this broadcast aswell

CDC5- outro

this is where the presenter signals the end of the broadcast
After doing this research it is clear to see that there are not many if not any differences between Radio that is produced on the commercial sector and Radio that is produced on the public sector.

Content Analysis

This is another example of primary Qualitative research that I did in order to find out what makes up a local radio news bulletin

what makes good news and what makes news good?

what makes good news is that it is accurate , well researched, timely and entertaining.

What makes good news are stories that both contain information and have importance. A lot of events happen day to day but the only events deemed important enough for news is decided by journalist. Journalist make that decision on whether the event contains one or more of the 9 news values. the news values are:

News Values

Timeliness- this news value is about how recent the news is. if an event happened along time ago it is seen as not news worthy but if it happened recently then it is.

Bad newsthis is news with a negative outcome. For example tragedy or a disaster

Impactthis refers to the idea that the more  people affected the more news worthy it is.  So for example if an event affects a small number of people then it won’t be reported

Celebrities/Elitecelebrity gossip and news about powerful people will more likely to be covered. So if a celebrity dies it is seen as more important than a normal person

Entertainment- This news value refers to human interest, which ultimately means stories that we find interesting and fun to read about. News stories relating to entertainment are commonly seen in many news articles, as entertainment is a great way for viewers to enjoy the news.

Follow ups- This news value refers to previous news stories that have been newly developed or new information on them has been discovered and shown on the news.

Media Agenda- This news value refers to a certain newspaper that has a specific outlook towards a certain issue. A media agenda in a newspaper is commonly known to focus on stories that can impact or affect many people and can also impact more than one country.

Proximity: The news value proximity involves how distant the news is from a person or area. The closer the proximity, the more relevant the news story is going to be to the audience in that area. If the news story location is further away from an audience, it makes the news less relevant to them. Therefore a close proximity makes news more valuable to people.

Unusual/Surprise: This news value refers to something happening unexpectedly This makes it exciting or shocking which grasps the attention of the audience who are watching or listening. Unusual news makes news more interesting and intrigues the audience.

1. Example of Newsworthy story
This story is deemed newsworthy as it contains the news value of bad news because it has a very negative outcome and impact because 7 people were killed in the crash. it also abides by the value timeliness as it happened very recently

2. Example of newsworthy story
This story is also deemed newsworthy as it features a celebrity/elite person. it also is a tragic story as a man was attacked.

Understanding Audience

Understanding audiences is not just about NUMBERS or other DEMOGRAPHIC features like whether the audience metrics are primarily male or rich or living in London BUT to understand thst audiences are constructed from complicated individuals who like and understand all sorts of things. So I started thinking about myself and came up with this proile my media likes

                                               Me and Media

In this section of my blog I wanted to show how me as an audience member to many different mediums use the media. One way in which I use media in my daily life is PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 is a gaming console which allows you to play with people from around the world. this is my favourite media outlet because it allows me to talk and play video games with my friends. it also allows me to play video games with people from around the world and test my skills against others. one of my favourite games to play on the PS4 is the call of duty black ops 3. This is a military first person shooter game released November 6 2015. I like this game because it is very easy to play with my friends and test my skills against there's. I also admire to skill it takes to play call of duty at a competitive level. It also fuels my desire to win by having competitive games like team Deathmatch and hard point and i can't wait for the next instalment in the series Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.

Another way in which media plays a role in my life is that a portion of my time is spent on YouTube watching videos. YouTube is a video sharing website created in 2005. I mainly like to watch gaming youtubers as gaming is something I’m very interested in. I also use snapchat on my phone to talk to my friends and keep people updated on my goings on. I also use messenger to message my friends and discuss several topics that effect us. But one of my favourite apps too use is Spotify because I really like to listen to music. It helps me focus so this app is very useful to me as it allows me listen to my favourite music for free.

Evidence of me using audacity tool
For two years I studied media for my GCSE's. from doing this I have acquired many new skills. on of the skills I have obtained is being able to use a microphone and mac to make a 4 minute radio show. By me doing media it has taught me how analyse different content and say why they fit there genre. i also learnt how to use a program audacity in order to edit voice clips and sync background music with the people talking. Later on in the course I had to learn how to use Photoshop and In Design to create a CD cover that was suited for a style of genre. Photoshop was needed to crop parts of one picture and place it onto another. I also used it to add effects so the picture stood out more

Encoding/Decoding

Stuart Hall's Decoding/Encoding Theory

This is the theory of how the media communicates with its audience. Firstly the media creates a message that is encoded with a meaning. It is then distributed to an audience. the audience then decodes the message for its meaning. but from this theory by Stuart says that everyone decodes the message differently

Active and Passive Audiences

Image result for active and passive audience theory
Picture illustrating a passive audience member
Active- This is where the audience does not accept the views and challenge the views of the medium.

passive- This is when the audience whole heartedly accepts the view of the media. This is a dominant decoding and the audience don't challenge the view at all

Types of decoding/Reading

Dominant decoding/reading- this when the audience respond to a product in a the way the media producer intended them to. This is the most widely accepted viewpoint of the message. There is very little to no misunderstanding of the message. The audience completely agrees with this message.

Negotiated decoding/reading- this is when a member of the audience partly agrees with the message sent out by the media. this is because they decode the message using their own views on society and the dominant culture. the message is inferred differently compared to the dominant reading. the audience decodes the message in a more personal way and this results in the viewer agreeing or disagreeing with the view point.

Oppositional decoding/reading- This is when the member of the audience completely disagrees with the message sent out by the media distributor. The audience member decodes the message using their own social beliefs and this leads them to disagree with what the message is telling them.

Example of decoding in local news

To understand Stuart halls model I have decided to use a message that has been encoded and write about the three different ways people could decode it. my example came from BBC local radio

Dominant Reading- the dominant reading of this is that people would be happy to here the carnival is back and completely agree with the amount of money being reinstated back into the funding of the event.

Negotiated Reading- The negotiated reading of this would be that people would be happy to hear the carnival is coming back but would challenge how much money they are giving to the carnival and would also argue that the money should be used somewhere else

Oppositional Reading- the oppositional reading of this is that it's a waste of money. the carnival is not that important and that the money being used on the carnival can be spent on something more worthwhile.

Theories

The uses and gratifications model- This is the theory stating that audience are not passive as they chose what they watch and listen to in terms of the media. Mcquail stays that audience use the media to satisfy there different needs either to be entertained or informed.

Cultivation theory- this theory states that the more we are exposed to the message created by social media the more likely we will believe it's portraying a social reality the main example of this would be the 'mean world syndrome'. this is the belief that content based around violence it will make the world seem more dangerous than it actually is. With the current stream of crime dramas like NCIS and law and order people now feel that the world is filled with drug dealers, drug lords and rapist waiting to get them.

Image result for Cultivation Theory Model
Cultivation theory model

Hypodermic Syringe Model- this model gives us an explanation for passive audiences. Marxist sociologists believed that media injects views to the passive viewers. The hypodermic syringe makes the message look like as directly inserted into the passive audience and that they have been affected and believe the messages of the media

Image result for hypodermic syringe model

Understanding local

According to the communications act 2003 local material is seen as media that is of particular interest to people living or working in a certain area. the media can be in a number of mediums for example (radio, newspapers or TV shows)

I take local to mean content that is taken from, and / or relevant to the station's licensed area and the audience should get a feel for the area by turning onto that particular station

Rajar

Audience can be split into two types niche and mass. niche being products aimed at specific people and mass being aimed at the average person. Demographics are how we categorise our audience. We categorise them in terms of there:

Age
Gender
Disability
Social Class
Ethnicity
Culture

BBC Bristol statistics

Rajar bristol stats

BBC London statistics

From the statistics I know that Bristol has a population of 905,000 and reaches 125'000 people in Bristol. This means that only 14% of people listen to the radio in Bristol. The average person listened to the radio for 1.1 hours. in comparison to London which has a population of 12,015,000 only 424,000 listen to the local radio of the area. this means that only 4% of people listen to the radio. the reason for this could be argued that as London is urban are everyone is more interconnected and therefore do not need to listen to the radio in order to get news on their local area. whereas a more rural place like Bristol are less interconnected sop a higher percentage of them listen too the local radio to stay informed

News item 1: Winter Wonderland

Chris was dedicated the job of going out into marble arch to research what our first topic should be. He went out into the public, to perform primary research, by asking the public what their favourite event/activity which they will attend during the winter seasons. He decided He would go around the Marble Arch area with my phone to record the responses of the events which people had said they were going to, using his phone. HE aimed to ask around 50 people about it

we created a tally where we counted up the mode of the answers which I had received which gave us quantitative data.

From the results, I was able to conclude that Winter Wonderland would be a popular choice for our news bulletin.

With Christmas being extremely close, we thought that it will result in more news stories, which will has news value of timeliness. In the Christmas season, we know that in the Marble Arch area, Winter Wonderland comes to there which covers the majority of Hyde Park. Therefore, I searched up on Google about it.
I found the following from researching on Google

We thought of this being a good draft however we wanted it to be more informative and informational. Also, we thought that Winter Wonderland would be a great place to get a Voxpox in as it is a highly populated area.

Evidence of editing

I decided to name each track in order to for it to be organised, so we can identify who
was talking in each moment. This helps us to pair together what each person has said in
one track which makes editing much easier.
This is a example of the use of the amplification tool to keep all of our voices at a consistent level and in all make the radio show sound smoother

News Item 1 finished audio

We decided to perform a Vox Pox for this topic as it was a highly populated attraction which we thought we could get a lot of answers for it. So we decided to ask people how they would feel if 'Winter Wonderland would close in the next few years'.

chris went to Winter Wonderland, with a TASCAM DR-05 microphone he recorded the responses from the interviewees and put all sound files together on Audacity to be exported.

This topic for me had the news values of timeliness due to the news value is something which is up and coming to the people of Marble Arch which they will pay more relevance towards. Also, it has proximity as Winter Wonderland takes place in Hyde Park which is very close to where Marble Arch, therefore people will have more interest in the event. This event also has impact as a news value. As it is owned by a german market, they may have to put more money into

News Item 2- Crime

For our next news item we used the sub-genre of crime. The local park in Marble Arch is Hyde Park, therefore this event was news worthy due to proximity.

"Police investigating the stabbing of three people in Hyde Park have released the photos of five suspects they want to identify. Three people including a police officer were stabbed in London’s Hyde Park on Tuesday evening
after a “water fight” near the Serpentine lake turned violent. The London Metropolitan Police said the crowd, which peaked at around 4,000 people, gathered for a largely peaceful water fight as temperatures soared, but as the evening wore on a “significant minority” became hostile towards officers monitoring the scene. Bottles were thrown at police officers after the mob became violent at around 8:40pm. The police officer, who was stabbed in the hand, and four colleagues who were injured by bottles were taken to a local hospital for treatment but have since been discharged. Two members of the public with stab wounds remain in hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. Scotland Yard said four of the men captured in CCTV footage are believed to have taken part in violent disorder in Hyde Park and the fifth at Marble Arch.

Aaron

Amber
Scotland Yard have said that four of the men captured on CCTV footage are believed to have taken part.

As a group we felt that this script was not good enough for our final recording as it failed to provide enough information about the incident and whether it was resolved

Amber
Bottle throwing escalated to one police officer being stabbed and four others being injured by bottles
Josh
Scotland Yard have said that 4 men captured on CCTV footage are believed to have taken part.
Aaron
Further investigation of the event will take place today.

Evidence of editing

As we all recorded our parts at once the splitting tool was needed to split the different sections of our recordings. we took pauses to indicate where the splitting had to be done. this tool allowed me to split the audio and place them in the right place

After using the splitting tool the time shift tool was used to put them into place. this allowed us to correctly order our show and make it sound smooth

News Item 2 finished audio

I felt that this news story was news worthy as it had elements of proximity due to the location of the stabbings which took place in Hyde Park. As it has taken place at that park, people who are close to the park are wanting to know how safe is the park to go visit. It is also seen as bad news due to that people have been injured including a police officer in an event which was supposed to be a feel-good event on a hot day

News Item 3 Ashura day

I researched this item as it took place fairly recently which I decided to research using Google where I was able to get news from the Evening Standard

Ashura Day resulted into many Shia Muslims going into the streets of Marble Arch and Oxford Street. Traffic was at a standstill. The celebration turned into a peaceful protest which emphasised that "Islam and Terrorism do not go hand and hand". It led to thousands into the streets of Oxford Street holding banners stating "Terrorism has no religion" and "men and women are equal in Islam". The message attempting to show Islam in the good light after ISIS claiming that they are associated with Islam.
I decided to do some research on Twitter to see how people may have felt about the following problem. Twitter is a popular app used for social media, therefore it will be extremely easy to find how it had affected people externally and those who participated in the event. People complained that the traffic from this was extremely bad which they took to social media to emphasise.

The views here are astonishing. Many protesters held signs proclaiming ‘terrorism has no religion’ and ‘men and women are equal in Islam’. The message was an attempt to show Islam in a positive light after ISIS claim to represent Islam.

I’m here with Khatlan, here wanting to share her views on the ongoing problem of the representation of Islam
We interviewed Khatlan, who is a devout Muslim and is extremely interested in the discrimination of Muslims around the world. We used a TASCAM DR-05 microphone to record Khatlan opinion on the question. We then we posted her response on Soundcloud. We would shorten the response as the original answer would be too long for the bulletin.

This is the selection tool. As Khatlan interview was very long we decided to take a much smaller
sample of the answer. We selected what we felt answered the question well, and we will filter it again.
This tool allowed to select our region between two points which we highlighted. We was simply able to
copy and paste the audio into our bulletin.

Once again, this topic has the news value of having proximity as it is taking place in Hyde Park. In addition, it has a news value of Elite, as Kings of Leon are a well-known rock band with large success as they have won a grammy in their prime which will attract many more people listening to the bulletin.

News Item 5: Shopping

  • This article was on the pay cuts which lead to an MP gaining 90,000 signatures from Marks & Spencers head office in Marble Arch which was against the deduction of pay. It would have led to 2700 having pay cuts which would lose them £1000 a year.

We did more research and we found one of the speeches of the Labour MP, Siobhain McDonagh, in which she explained about this situation.

It has the news value of proximity once again as it takes place in Oxford Street, which will attract many locals and others to come and see the big event for themselves. Also, it has a good news element as families and people will come together in unison to celebrate the start of the festive Christmas season.

Finished News Bulletin Production

Final Version of the News Bulletin on Audacity
This screenshot demonstrates how the multiple tracks on audacity flow into one continuous bulletin effectively. Despite the conventional way of new bulletins whereby news items of high importance are situated earlier on in the bulletin, we have opted for a non-conventual structure whereby the news items of greater importance are towards the latter of the show. This is due to a special relationship with our local audience who expect the unexpected and therefore want to hear a more non-conventional structure.

  1. Aaron.

A couple of comments. Look again at the use of font styles to ensure a greater continuity of appearance. You should also analyse the GENRE of local radio news more carefully - identifying just TWO codes and conventions is insufficient.
